I should probably introduce myself. I've been using C++ since 1989, and at that time I wrote several chapters of the original documentation for Borland and Turbo C++. I joined the ISO standards committee for C++ in March of 1991 and served until 2000. I designed and did the reference implementation for bitset and what became vector<bool> (Boost::dynamic_bitset) in 1991. I was a columnist for the C++ Users Journal for a few years and then was senior editor for its last two years before it got swallowed up by Dr. Dobbs.
I have been on the faculty in the computer science department at Utah Valley University since 2001, afterv20 years as a software developer. I also have offered two books on C++, Code Capsules, and Thinking C++ Volume 2 (with Bruce Eckel). I teach advanced courses in C++ and Python as well as analysis of programming languages and the theory of computation. I am very interested in teaching the mastery of languages as well as the mathematical foundations for computing.

Hi Folks,
A quick introduction of myself: My name is Mike Shah and I am part of the teaching faculty at Northeastern University. I primarily perform my research in C++ in the domains of program analysis and software visualization. I would certainly be in support of this style conference, and am willing to help at some level (Whether that be participating on this list, organizing, reviewing papers, etc.)
My understanding is that OOPSLA is still a top academic conference, though it has shifted to be more broad than language design. I think an important question folks are asking on how we will distinguish this venue from others. I certainly believe this should be a forum for publishing best practices in teaching C++.
Is the other intent to have very broadly (e.g. systems, programming language, machine learning, graphics, etc) research performed in C++ to be available to this venue? I'm listing some conferences as examples that are specific to some tool/language that may spark some ideas on how to model this venue (Or perhaps someone could share another conference they imagine this models more closely to).

(i.e. Replace any specific language or tool with "C++" this might be what I imagine a call for papers would be)

Would it make sense to conduct relevant training sessions on cutting edge algorithms/technologies using C++ in field-specific conferences? For instance, in the field of Medical Imaging, MICCAI<http://miccai.org/>?s annual meetings would be a nice target in collaboration with Kitware (they design and maintain the ITK<https://itk.org/> library, one of the most widely used toolkits in the field).

I have been hiring for my team recently and I get the impression that current graduates are taught very antiquated methods in C++ and that notion needs to change if we would like traction in the academic community.

I presented a few times at OOPSLA. I don't feel it's relevant for me anymore, and I really don't hear much about it these days.

I do like the idea of having a conference associated with ACM. That's what CCSC does at a regional level (I have presented there many times over the last 15 years). For me personally, the idea of an academic conference that focuses on teaching as well as other interesting issues related to software development and programming languages is very appealing. CCSC does that, but it lacks relevance to and connection with industry. So either I like the idea of beefing up the academic component of Cppcon, or having another conference which is more welcoming to academics and yet still keeps the connection to industry. I live in both worlds, and I think there are many like me.

Is OOPSLA focused on what its name says (OOP)? It looks to me like cutting edge never uses ?virtual.? I don?t really know what OOPSLA is doing or what academic research is going on related to C++. Please help me learn.

Do you know how to go about setting up an affiliation with ACM or IEEE?

I assume you did that for BoostCon, right?
